Maimonides’ The Guide of the Perplexed is well-known for its“esoteric” style, which makes the book obscure, even cryptic. In theGuide, Maimonides discusses uniquely at length on the biblical Bookof Job (III 22-23) as part of his discussion on the issue of Providence(III 8-24). He also explicitly states that The Book of Job is “a parableintended to set forth the opinions of people concerning providence”(III 22 beginning). It thus becomes crucial to decipher his interpretationof Job, so as to understand his own position on Providence. The presentpaper attempts to offer a close reading on Maimonides’ explanation ofJob in the Guide, exploring the author’s probable intention behind hisuse of esoteric devices on the one hand and discerning the gist of hisstandpoints of Providence on the other.
