This paper examines how translator gender influences the Chinese translations of Doris Lessing’s Free Women. Specifically, the depiction of
Richard as portrayed in the Chinese context. By studying two translated
versions of the novel, one male and one female translator, in relation to
gender, this paper attempts to demonstrate that translator gender can be a
major variable in the translation of feminist fiction.
