The present paper aims to probe into how the speech acts performed with illocutionary reporting verbs are dealt with in four Chinese translations of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and how effective the illocutionary force is delivered when the narrator’s and the characters’speech acts are represented. It is noted that when translating the illocutionary verbs, the translators tend to produce variations in their translations. The most prevalent practice is to translate them literally, which results in weakening the illocutionary forces. The other way is to decrease their illocutionary forces by rendering them into neutral reporting verbs such as shuo (“say” in Chinese). These renderings may hinder the target reader from interpreting the motives of speech acts performed by the narrator or the characters. More successful translations are found in adding adverbs or adverbial phrases to intensify particular illocutionary forces. We suggest that pragmatic contrastive analysis of illocutionary verbs is necessary in translation analysis in that it helps the translator attend to the speech acts performed in particular contexts and interpret the illocutionary component encoded in the reporting verbs with a purpose to enhance or weaken the illocutionary forces.
