本文嘗試以一新的架構來定位孟子政治思想中的義利之辨。作者擬提了四種主要的純粹類型,分別是屬於「取代模式」的「以義斥利」屬於「條件模式」的「先義後利」、屬於「化約模式」的「義即公利J以及屬於「因果模式」的「以義生利」。作者逐一分析了這些類型對孟子義利之辨的適切性與解釋力。最後得出的結論是,雖然孟子存在有若干「先義後利」的成分,也確實有肯定公利而輕私利的傾向,但更正確地來說,他是在動機或存心上唯「義」是求,屬於高濃度的「以義斥利」類型;而又樂於將「利」視為由「義」所衍生的必然結果,接近於「以義生利」的類型。
This paper aims at analyzing Mencius’s distinction between propriety and
benefit with a new framework. The author constructs four kinds of ideal-type,namely “propriety against benefit” (replacement pattern), “propriety before benefit”(conditional pattern), “propriety qua public interest” (reductive pattern) and“propriety derives benefit” (causal pattern). The paper analyzes the adequateness and interpretive ability of each of these ideal-types. The paper concludes that Mencius held the thickest type of “propriety against benefit” on the level of motivation, and leant toward the type of “propriety derives benefit” on the level of result.
