This paper was based on the two Ma-zu Temples in Feng-shan (Shuang-ci Ting) and Nan-zi (Nan-he Gong), Kaohsiung and was to explore the connotations of their believers’ spontaneous religious behaviors. Traditionally, Taiwanese folk believers used the “red sachet” as an amulet to protect them from evil. They believed the red sachet was sacred and was the carrier of their god, which was a common belief in Taiwan. In addition to the traditional way, the two Ma-zu Temples in Feng-shan and
Nan-zi, Kaohsiung created a new amulet, Ma-zu shoes, which were believed as powerful as the red sachet in their belief. Although the two temples both had Ma-zu shoes as an amulet, they referred to different things actually. But they are closely related. The purpose of this paper was to elaborate on the development of the two new amulets and to probe into the meaning of their belief.
