日本腦炎感染的症狀包含高燒、抽筋、意識障礙、四肢僵直等，死亡率可高逹5-60%。本案例，34歲男性罹患嚴重性日本腦炎，發生意識障礙、高燒、肢體抽搐及神經性心臟停止。於住院期間，以支持性治療後仍無法控制病性，於住院後一個月，仍高燒不退，加入中醫治療，使用安宮牛黃丸合併溫膽湯，治其內閉外脫之症，去其痰火壅塞，並加附子回陽。計其整個療程所用之安宮牛黃丸，共100顆，症狀才得以回穩。本嚴重性日本腦炎病例，在中西醫結合治療下，目前患者對外在刺激的反應顯著改善，並正進行拔除呼吸器的訓練。
