The ocean itself is huge, wild and mysterious. Its various dimensions have both a physical and psychological affect on human beings living close to it. As people from diverse cultures, allured by the ocean for whatever reasons, gradually molded their own ocean cultures, the influence of the ocean became more apparent. In this paper an aim is made to analyze essays written on the influences of the ocean by Zhu Shi-jie, a Chinese scholar and traveling officer in Taiwan. Around 300 years ago, he portrayed a close relationship between the ocean and the local life of inhabitants here. Traces of the ocean's original effect on the thought patterns of Taiwanese can be found even in modern day Taiwanese culture. Through an analysis of Zhu Shi-jie's papers, an understanding can be attained on how the original fascination of the ocean around Taiwan has affected people in Taiwan.
