本文主旨，係探討：在20世紀末全球化浪潮造成國家權力變遷的背景下，如何面對挑戰、把握機會以進行當代國家角色的轉型。為此，本研究擬以國家中心論為主要研究途徑，探討全球化與國家角色兩個主要變數間的關係。主要包括：全球化的基本意涵，以及其所帶來的挑戰與機會；並進一步了解20世紀末全球化對於國家的重要影響，主要焦點在於國家權力變遷的觀察，其中又以國家主權及自主性二者為主要研究變數；並探究國家治理及其與全球治理的矛盾與調和的關係。研究發現，在當代全球化下，如果國家做好角色轉型：發現確實方向、尋求合適模式、擬定最佳策略、有效臨機應變、扶貧維繫公平與國家及職能建構，才可以有面對21世紀全球化接受挑戰以應變、掌握機會以發展的足夠能力。

The major purpose of this study is to analyze the transition of thestates’ role in contemporary globalization which began at the end ofthe 20th century. Furthemore, focus will be placed on the opportunitiesand challenges which states have faced in this era. These purposes areapproached using a framework developed in accordance with statecenteredtheory. Particular focus is given to the relationships betweencontemporary globalization and the states’ role. In order to do this, basicdefinition of contemporary globalization and its challenges and opportunitiesis discussed. Furthermore, this issue of the nature of statepower in the contemporary globalized world is discussed with considerationgiven to the importance of state power and state autonomy.Specifically, the author discusses how the states respond to contemporaryglobalization and what is the connection between state governanceand global governance. The major finding of this research is thatstates can play transitional roles finding realistic directions. This canbe achieved through searching good governance modes, presentingeffective developmental strategies, responding to crisises with efficacy,maintaining social justice and focusing on improving infrastructurecapacities. By doing this they will be able to develop and face thechallenges presented by crisis due to contemporary globalization inthe 21st century.
