This article makes use of “scriptural reasoning” in order to interpret the interchange between languages through the translation of the “Chinese classics” (Liu yi ) by the missionary James Legge. Scriptural reasoning may be defined as: 1. Scriptural Reasoning is a wisdomseeking engagement with diverse others, which is open to all people, cultures, religions, disciplines, arts, media and sphere of life, as a joint response to the cries of a suffering world. It is an engagement with many voices, without authoritative overviews or native speakers, where nobody exclusively owns the final meaning of the scripture. 2. Scriptural Reasoning is a boundary-crossing liturgy, in which the presence of God might be variously identified. Its purpose is to make this deep reasoning public, and there are no religious traditions to speak of without deep reasoning. 3. Scriptural Reasoning helps us not only gain a better understanding of others, but also has the potentiality of helping us gain a better understanding of our own scripture and tradition. Scriptural reasoning offers us a new way of considering Legge’s translation, particularly as a way of dealing with the interaction between East and West. This paper argues that Legge’s religious sensibilities enabled him to see deeper senses of the texts. The article closes with a discussion of another instance of translation as “scriptural reasoning,” this time by engaging with some elements of the work of Slavoj Žižek.
