Since 2008, the Taoyuan Drug Abuse Prevention Center (DAPC) has provided addicted inmates with a group guidance program before their discharge. It was hoped that the addicted inmates would contact DAPC and use the services of DAPC after discharge from prison. However, the 2006-2008 records of the Taoyuan DAPC revealed that the lost to follow-up rate was high and the proportion of addicted offenders who accessed services was low. Hence, the Taoyuan DAPC redesigned the group guidance program to provide more activities and different content. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the newly-designed group guidance program before discharge on inmates’ self-discovery and coping with emotion, family relationships, abstinence confidence, and satisfaction.
Methods A pre- and post-test intervention trial with a control group was used. The intervention group took the new group guidance program with 8 activities in 2 months. The control group took the old group guidance program with 2 activities in one month. Results During April – July, 2010, 38 inmates in the experimental group and 85 in the control group completed the trial. Significantly better performances for those in the experimental group than for those in the control group were found in: post-test scores for abstinence confidence (3.5 vs. 3.3, p=0.0314), pre- and post-test scores for self-discovery (0.2 vs. -0.04, p=0.0077), management of emotions (85.3% vs. 29.7%, p<0.0001), interacting with people (61.8% vs. 31.1%, p=0.0026), and family relations (58.8% vs. 20.3%, p<0.0001).Conclusions Better scores for self-discovery and coping with emotions, and abstinence confidence were seen in the experimental group (newly-designed group guidance program) than in the control group; however, there was no difference in satisfaction with the program between the two groups.
