停經婦女易於有肥胖的傾向且脂肪移向腹部堆積，而造成健康及美容上的問題。七層塔是一種熱帶地區發現的傳統草藥，富含有植物賀爾蒙及天然抗氧化物，能夠保護不受氧化壓力的傷害，並具有抗肥胖的特質。本研究採用卵巢切除鼠活體實驗模式模擬停經婦女，測試七層塔葉之水萃取物對動情素缺乏相關代謝失調徵候群的效果。雌性大鼠分別接受卵巢切除及假手術，卵巢切除鼠分成三組，分別是七層塔處理組(劑量40 毫克/公斤體重)，動情激素處理組(劑量25 毫克/公斤體重)，及無處理組，而與假手術組對照比較，實驗共進行十三周。實驗結果顯示，七層塔萃取物能顯著地降低體重而能保護不受動情激素缺乏影響而堆積脂肪。組織檢查發現在大鼠不同部位的脂肪細胞有不同大小的體積變化，而顯示對脂肪分布的生物效應。研究總結七層塔可呈現對抗動情激素缺乏導致的肥胖症的保護作用，其所含的植物賀爾蒙及天然抗氧化物可以成為停經婦女預防及補充療法的選擇。

Menopause tends to be associated with an increased risk of obesity and a shift to an abdominal fat distribution, which can cause healthy and cosmetic problem. Ocimum gratissimum is a traditional herb commonly found in tropical regions, which is abundant of phytoestrogens and natural antioxidants to protect from oxidative stress and exerts anti-obesity properties. Aqueous Ocimum gratissimum leaf extracts (OGE) were tested in
vivo in oviectomizied-rat model for estrogen-deficiency associated dysmetabolism. Female Sprague-Dawley rats were ovariectomizied (OVX) and compared with sham-operated rats.OVX rats were divided to 3 groups with non-treated, estrogen-treated (doses 25 μg/kg bodyweight), and OGE-treated (doses 40 mg/kg bodyweight), which proceeded for 13 weeks.Our experiments showed that OGE significantly reduce body weight and protected from estrogen-deficiency associated fat accumulation.
Histological examination of adipose tissue in various regions revealed different-sized adipocytes, which implying biological effects on fat distribution. We concluded that Ocimum gratissimum may possess protective properties against estrogen-deficiency associated obesity. Phytoestrogens and natural antioxidants can be effective options in prevention and complementary therapy for menopause women.
