A Himalayan Wood Owl (Strix newarensis) was discovered on June 24, 2008 in the upstream of Balian Stream, Yangmingshan National Park, northern Taiwan. The last record of the owl in the Datun Volcano Group was reported by Robert Swinhoe 150 years ago in the Qixingshan area.This record suggested that the biodiversity of Datun Volcanic Group is being restored and continuous monitoring in this mountain area is necessary.
