A prescription titled“zhi lushiqing xingjie jiefu fang"(治魯氏青行
解解腹) was found in the medical manuscripts unearthed from Wuwei,
Gansu province. Regarding the meaning of“xingjie"(行解), although
several discussions had already been made, there still exists a wide spectrum
of opinion among scholars. For example, Wang Hui interpreted the word
“xing"(行) as“taking a walk,” and “xingjie"therefore means to exert
drug efficacy and cleanse toxic fever and chills out of body through walking.
Du Yong defined“xingjie"as the treatment for exogenous febrile disease
without the aid of perspiration. Akabori Hiroshi, a Japanese scholar,
explained “xingjie” as the process of “gradual relief” from diseases. Duan
Jing also interpreted the character “xing” in “xingjie” with modern Chinese
word “jiu"(就) and“xingjie"thus refers to“relieve immediately."
However, with a more detailed analysis in ancient Chinese texts, we
could find the word“xing"was used as classifiers of“li"(痢 means
“dysentery”) in traditional medical literature. This paper hence considers
“xingjie"should be a therapy aiming to relieve superficies and dispel cold
and to drive body’s sickness out through the excretion of feces or urine.
