Commercials act as mirrors of social change. Nittoh Black Tea commercials from the Japanese Colonial Period reflect the influences of Japanese colonialism and Western culture. When Western black tea culture spread to Taiwan, it fused with Western, Japanese, and Taiwanese cultural elements. From a cultural perspective, this can be seen as a phenomenon of cultural integration. From a sociological perspective, Nittoh Black Tea commercials reflect aspects of social change in Taiwan during the Japanese Colonial Period - an increase in the social status of women, changes in social practices, and the rise of the middle class. In response to this, black tea commercials went from depicting black tea as a symbol of the aristocracy to something that could be enjoyed by the middle class. Drawing from Nittoh Black Tea commercials and other related historical data, this paper reveals how Taiwan’s black tea culture embodied cultural phenomena and social characteristics of Taiwan during the Japanese Colonial Period. It is a Western tea culture that is not entirely Western. Rather, it is one that fuses Western, Japanese, and Taiwanese cultural elements, and reflects social phenomena occurring in Taiwan during that era.
