A turn of a century has always caused people to reflect on every aspect of life on this earth. In recent years, many exhibitions have been curated to give a retrospective look into art and culture, including artist centennial retrospective exhibitions, exploration of contexts of art history, retrospective exhibitions of art exhibition development, etc. In particular, the 80 Years of Taiwan Art Exhibition published by the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts and the Catalog and Essays of the Official Fine Arts Exhibition in Taiwan During the Japanese Occupation published by Taiwan Soka Association explore the effects that exhibitions have on the development of artists and culture. This has prompted the author to search through archives of Taiwan Nichinichi Shimpo (Taiwan Daily Newspaper) for reports related to the 1927~1936 Taiden (Taiwan Art Exhibition) and the 1938~1943 Fuden (Taiwan Governor-General’s Art Exhibition). In these reports, the author discovers that the problems faced by the Taiwan’s first government-organized fine arts exhibition were not just related to the promotion of artistic exchange and the proper accordance of credit to the artists. There was also a considerable range of matters involving art administration that are similar to the problems that art exhibitions deal with today. Even more, the first government-organized exhibition was a large-scale exhibition led by individuals who did not hold any previous art administration experience. All of its measures were continuously being revised as they tested the consensus of organizers, artists, jurors, and viewers. This paper mainly refers sources from Taiwan Nichinichi Shimpo, which was the most influential newspaper during the Japanese Colonial Period. With the involvement of government shares, it became an important source of information for Taiden and Fuden.Reports on events that occurred during Taiden and Fuden are analyzed and utilized as the axis for research and discussion. With this information, various problems in the art administration o that time are explored, providing reference for fine arts exhibitions today.
