The purpose of this cross-sectional study
was to establish a reliable and valid instrument to
evaluate the errors in English nursing note
writing. To test the reliability, validity,
difficulty, discrimination, and corrected item-
total correction of the Nursing Note Grammar Scale,
five nursing English teachers and two hundred fifty
students from a local institute of technology in
northern Taiwan participated in the research. A
total of eight nursing grammar categories
containing forty test questions were established
through literature review, discussions with Nursing
English faculty, English for Specific Purpose (ESP)
materials survey, and administering of the pilot
test. The categories selected are Omitting the
Subject, Omitting the Object, Omitting the Subject
and the Verb BE, Omitting the Article, Omitting the
Verb BE, Using Abbreviations, Writing in Passive
Voice, and Writing with a Tense. The findings
showed that in general, the validity and
reliability of the scale were very good except that
among the eight grammar categories the reliability
and discrimination indexes of the two grammar
categories Using Abbreviations and Writing with a
Tense did not evaluate what they intended to
measure; the difficulty analysis showed that the
three grammar categories Omitting the Subject,
Using Abbreviation, and Writing with a Tense did
not evaluate what was intended to measure; and that
for corrected item-total correction analysis some
of the items in the two grammar categories Using
Abbreviations and Writing with a Tense were not
homogeneous with the rest of the items within the
same grammar category. With proper modification and
retesting, the scale can be used to analyze nursing
students' English nursing note grammatical errors
and can serve to assess nursing professionals'
English nursing note grammar proficiency.
