1966年，徐復觀提出文體與文類之辨，指摘明清選文家混淆文章的「分類」與「分體」。這種混淆至今依然存在；但是，徐氏認為「文體」與「文類」截然為二，卻又不明其關係，也非確論。本文嘗試從文學批評史的脈絡—即回歸到古代文論家對文體之論述與文章分類的語境中，重新探討「文體」與「文類」的涵義，並且進一步釐清二者究竟存在什麼樣的關係。主文三個單元，分論文體的涵義、文類的涵義以及二者的關係。其論述步驟則先分析「體」與「類」二詞的「辭典性涵義」及「一般概念性涵義」，再就古代文體論述的語境分析二者的「理論性涵義」；接著，依據「體」之一詞的理論性涵義，進而運用大量文體論述的史料，分析體裁、體製、體貌、體式、體格、體要、文體等幾個關鍵性複詞的理論性涵義；最後，分析二者究竟其有什麼樣的關係？「文體」與「文類」概念有別，但二者卻具有「彼此限定，相互依存」的關係。在形式邏輯上，文體是文類內涵的概念限定；相對的，文類是文體外延的概念限定。在文章的實存狀態中，文體是文類之形構與樣態的實在限定；相對的，文類是文體的關係限定。二者相互依存，非可獨立而在。

This paper explores previous scholars' understanding of the concepts of literary form and genre, with a focus on Ming and Ch'ing dynasty critics' points of view regarding these two concepts. The purpose of this exploration is to attempt to redefine them from the perspective of a literary historian.The paper is divided into three parts, devoted to the issues of form, genre, and their relationship, respectively. The methodologies taken include philological analysis and theoretical analysis. The concluding part of the paper focuses on the notion of relative determination which explains the basic link connecting the form with the genre.
