本文的研究目的在於：「探究批判地名學在國家與地方、族群議題上的主要 研究取向，並提出其在此研究議題上的學術貢獻。」在文中，筆者將先針對1980 年代以後國外的地名研究轉向及轉向後地名的功能進行討論，再進一步聚焦在關 於國家與地方、族群互動議題的批判地名研究上。
研究結果顯示，批判地名學者在探討國家與地方、族群的議題上，主要有下 列幾種研究取向：（1)展現政治權力由上而下施加的規範、壓迫與排斥的地名政 治；（2)展現政治權力內部角力互動的地名政治；（3)強調政策下的地方抵抗力 量的地名政治；（4)以地方內部角力及地方感維繫查看對政治環境反饋的地名政 治；（5)著重探討空間階層、位置的地名政治；（6)探討距政治權力核心遠近的 地名變遷及地名邊界議題。
藉由地名，可以串聯起地理學中的地景、空間與地方三個重要的地理概念。
此外地理學傳統中的人與人、人與地、地與地等三大關係在批判地名學中的權力 互動、地名情感、空間政治中更可獲得充分的展現。是故筆者以為，批判地名學 基本上可以將地理學中的三個重要的地理概念與三大關係引人探討國家與地 方、族群的研究議題之中，探查各種權力形態間互動的各式形式，進而提出有別 於其他學科的獨到見解。

This article aims to engage with literature debate on critical toponymy with specific attention to nation, place and ethnic group. I argue that there are six different but inter-related stances on critical toponymy and politics between place and place-naming: (1) power control and oppressions from top; (2) internal contestation within political power; (3) local resistance; (4) formation and transformation of senses of place; (5) spatial scale and locations of place; (6) dynamics between name in change and boundary in revision in relation to geographic distances with the state power. I conclude that the study of place naming is an intermediate to conceptually link with certain important geographic ideas like landscape, space, and place. By doing so, the critical toponymy enables us to further theorize human-human, human-land and land-land relations behind power interaction, senses of place and spatial politics.
