Purpose: The objective of this study was to investigate the discrepancies in heartrate deceleration and archery performance between children with developmentalcoordination disorder and typically developing children as well as the relationshipbetween heart rate deceleration and archery performance. Methods: There were 20 (10males, 10 females) children with developmental coordination disorder and 20 (10males, 10 females) typically developing children aged between 11 and 12 years. Polarheart rate monitor (RS, Polar Electro Oy, Finland) was used to collect the physiologicreaction of heart rate while performing archery task. The archery performance wasalso recorded. Independent t test was used to compare the difference in basic data, heart rate deceleration and archery performance. Pearson product-moment correlationwas used to compute the coefficient between heart rate deceleration and archeryperformance. Results: Children with DCD showed significantly less amount of heartrate deceleration (t=7.652, p<.001) and lower level of archery performance(t=6.494,p<.001) than those of typically developing children. In addition, there was asignificant positive relationship between heart rate deceleration and archeryperformance (r=0.516, p<.001), demonstrating greater amount of heart ratedeceleration with better archery performance and vice versa. Conclusion: Childrenwith developmental coordination disorder may exploit different attention strategywhich accounts for the lower level of archery performance. Besides, the mental stateand emotion state may differ between children with developmental coordinationdisorder and typically developing children, causing the difference of archeryperformance between groups. Further investigations regarding the effect of exercisetraining and intervention on the modulation of heart rate reaction is suggested.
