This article explores the topic of self-awareness in an experiencing group. From August 29 to September 2,2011, the first author participated in an experiencing group at the 15th European Symposium in Group Analysis at Goldsmiths College of London University. The same author recorded the interactive processes among the group members, and kept a reflective diary. In addition, peer discussions about data analysis were held weekly. Self-awareness within the group included (1) representations of transcultural experience, (2) interlacing of exclusion and involvement, and (3) Reacting against others as a way to explore inner self. Self-awareness after the group included (1) how the ongoing group represented ongoing life learning and (2) facing self, others, and the group. The group represented a phantasy object that satisfied the emotional and task needs of its members. Group interactions and processes activated the individual’s sense of self and personal adjustment as well as awareness of life issues. The connection between group and real-life experiences forced each person to acknowledge certain existential issues and responsibilities towards others.
