在《說文》四大家中,桂馥《說文》學之相關研究,最為缺乏。究其因,為學者多將焦點放在桂馥《說文義證》「臚列古籍」之特色上,使桂馥之《說文》研究,產生缺乏個人創見之印象。本文旨在整理桂馥對於《說文》義例之觀念,期能從不同面向,探索桂馥《說文》學之成就。近人黃侃嘗云:「治小學不可講無條例之言、與無證據之言。」清代學者研治《說文》時,已相當注重《說文》義例之發掘,成就最大者,當屬段玉裁《說文注》,後世研究者亦夥。桂馥《說文義證》亦有申明義例者,然學者對於桂馥《說文》義例之觀念,少有相關之研究。職是,筆者嘗試研究桂馥對於《說文》義例之觀念,並輔以段玉裁之義例觀念作一比較,以見桂馥之得失。
