The myths of earthquake from Taiwanese indigenous peoples that are collected and recorded, starting from the colonial Japanese period to current time, can be classified into six types: earthquake made by the body movement of animals supporting the earth, earthquake made by the body movements of the deity or giants supporting the earth, earthquake made by angry deity, earthquake made by angry deity shaking the world pillars, summoning of ancestral spirit to stop earthquake, and earthquake made by airflow under the earth. The diversity of the Taiwanese aborigines earthquake myth, is of great significance in the world's earthquakes myth type maps.
Among the Taiwanese aboriginal groups, the earthquake myths of the Piwan people are unique because they focus more on the close relationship between deity and human and less on motifs unrelated to human such as earthquakes made by animal body movements. Therefore, the field research of this study is centered around the Paiwan people. The earthquake myths, which were popular in Japanese colonial period about deity or giants supporting earth or earth pillars, had disappeared. Today it is a widely spread myth that summoning ancestral spirits to stop earthquake is helpful. The earthquake myths of the Paiwan people have changed in the past century, and this generates an important topic for study of earthquake myth of all aboriginal groups in Taiwan.
