Interior decorative woodwork carpenters typically work in environments with constant dust and noise, haul heavy equipment between locations, adopt unnatural postures, and perform repetitive tasks. Thus, their likelihood of developing health issues, including respiratory damage, hearing loss, bone and muscle injury, and eye and skin irritation, is fairly high. This study explores the working conditions and perceived health status of carpenters through operational observations and questionnaires. We measured the dust concentration and noise from equipment to investigate the occupational hazards of carpenters.
Among the 60 carpenters we interviewed from central Taiwan, 33.3% and 63.3% had experienced abnormal eye and skin symptoms during or after work. A high proportion attributed their symptoms to the use of calcium silicate boards; the use of this fireproof board is apparently increasing. When cut, these boards generate significantly more dust than plywood. Approximately, 68.3% of workers experienced muscular soreness and pain at the waist, upper arms, shoulders, and neck. Dust concentrations at workplaces reached 4.92 mg/m , and the respirable dust concentration measured from personal samples was 1.13 mg/m , within the permissible exposure limits (PELs) in Taiwan. Noise was measured at 97.6 dBA for the circular saws, 101.6 dBA for the nail guns, and 92.0 dBA for the onsite air compressor. Frequency spectrum analysis showed that the highest sound pressure frequency occurred around 4KHz.
Our onsite observations confirmed that carpenters often work in unsafe conditions; for example, they use stepladders without securing the legs and operate circular saws without protective shields,
increasing the possibility of injuries. We recommend that the government and labor unions promote health and safety training. Finally, developing safe and user-friendly equipment can reduce carpenters' occupational hazards.
