Individuals outside the People’s Republic of China (PRC) are becoming more interested in learning about China’s history and culture. The primarily web-based project, ChinaVine, was developed, in part, to respond to this growing interest in China and to communicate a nuanced and complex conception of China’s cultural heritage for English speaking/reading/writing audiences. As those foreign to China learn about Chinese culture through ChinaVine, they are likely to simultaneously learn about themselves. This act of discovery is central to the educational process of ChinaVine.
In this article, we: 1) give the reader an overview of the ChinaVine project; 2) address art and art educational theory that grounds ChinaVine; 3) discuss the functions of this web-based project and the social media used within the project; 4) explore the possibilities of EduVine, the new educational component of ChinaVine; 5) describe the educational benefits of the cross-cultural research model; and 6) conclude with implications for the field of art education.
