臺灣的大學教育是通識教育，側重理論與思考，主要在培養學生具有一定程度的知識水準且能獨立思考。因此，談到室內設計教育的目標，就應討論理論與實務間平衡的問題，應用學科的教育不應與社會脫節，理論應領導實務，但理論不能完全取代實務，如何才能在二者間取得平衡是室內設計教育的首要問題。本研究主要目的為探討臺灣室內設計教育發展與課程內容概況，希望能藉由此研究結果了解臺灣室內設計教育之發展現狀，提供給室內設計學界、業界從業人員參考。 臺灣的大學院校室內空間設計學系發展，截至2010年為止，已經有25所室內空間設計學系等相關系所成立。臺灣的室內空間系所在教學上大多秉持著分組教學、小班教學、重視團隊合作與分組實習操作，結合數位科技與電腦輔助設計之專業教學。臺灣大學院校的室內設計系課程除了「室內設計的符號與圖例」沒有統一的既有問題之外，連課程名稱都十分多樣化，開課年級與必選修的設定也因系所而有相當大的差異。因此，如何讓室內設計課程的內容能理論與實務並重，且在專業職能培訓上能夠達到一致，讓臺灣大學院校25所學校室內設計教育所培養出來的專業室內設計人才能夠達到「學為所用」之教育目標，進而提升臺灣「軟實力」之設計競爭力就成為臺灣室內設計教育一個值得省思之重要課題。
