The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that affect Taiwanese prospective college students’ college-choice. Theoretical model of the study was constructed on the basis of a critical review of relevant literature. Secondary-data analysis and structural equation model were used to investigate the relationships between affordability (including “cost determinant” and “grant aid determinant”), college characteristic (including “college reputation,” “college location,” and “college facilities”), and “employability expectation.” Database of the study was derived from “Construct of index on decision-making system of higher education choice opportunity” provided by Professor Tang Yao of Cheng Kung University. Participants were 726 prospective college students. In order to verify the theoretical model of the study, the research was divided into two parts. First, we examined the mediating effects of “college reputation,” “college location,” and “college facilities” on “cost determinant”/“grant aid determinant” and “employability expectation.” Second, we used structural equation model to determine the relationships between the six variables. The findings of our study are as follows. First, “college reputation” was found to mediate between “cost determinant” and “employability expectation.” Second, “college reputation” was found to partially mediate between “grand aid determinant” and “employability expectation.” Third, “college location” was found to partially mediate between “grand aid determinant” and “employability expectation.” Fourth, “college facilities” was found to partially mediate between “grant aid determinant” and “employability expectation.” Fifth, “college reputation,” “college location,” and “college facilities” were found to positively predict “employability expectation.” Finally, based on the findings, this study made some suggestions to education authorities andfor further studies.
