Turning is crucial on traditional Chinese social etiquette, especially for moving forward or backward. In the Book of Etiquette and Ceremonial, it can be clockwise or counterclockwise, big or small, circular or not, which all depends on the situation. The turning direction does not imply good or bad luck, nor does it indicate the ceremony is religious or military as mentioned in "Wushum," Lost Book of Zhou. Its purpose is to perform etiquette. When turning, one should act cautiously, catch other's attention, and keep a distance from others without showing his back to them.
