建築良好的表情圖像是種種設計意圖的綜合表現，反映在材料、組織構成與地方涵構上，因此所產生的圖像不是無意識的造形或一昧的擬仿裝飾。本研究更積極的將其建構為一種「正向裝飾」的觀點，從基本的幾何美到新興的數位型態，在材料、數位、工藝與文化之間，建構一種具正面價值的裝飾觀點。
正向裝飾將由「構築精神」論起，排除模仿與偽飾，並加入「文化性」的探討，加強當代技術與在地素材的運用轉化，勾勒出較積極的裝飾建構，提供出形式創新、材料運用創新的能量，使當前建築的表情不僅是新技術的表現，或思古幽情的仿舊，而是在兩者間產生加乘效果─「讓思古幽情有所轉化，讓當代技術有所加值」。本文透過對裝飾的意圖探討，綜合美學的、文化的、工程的各種考量，並擷取相關案例在「觀念變革」與「形式變革」之訴求，歸納出「正向裝飾」的概念方向，最後綜合相關概念有四，作為分析探討的架構基礎：1.新藝—新技術產生的新圖像紋理、2.重思—傳統材料的新應用形式、3.反轉—具構築精神的裝飾、4.融合—運用新舊技術、文化元素的構築意念表現。
