Osteoporosis is the thinning of bone tissue and loss of bone density over time. It is the most common type of bone disease. Researchers estimate that about 1 out of 5 American women over the age of 50 years has osteoporosis. About half of all women over the age of 50 years will experience a fracture of the hip, wrist, or vertebra. It has no specific symptoms, and usually, there are no symptoms in the early stages of the disease. Its main consequence is an increased risk of bone fracture. Symptoms occurring late in the disease may include bone pain, tenderness, fractures with little or no trauma, loss of height (by as much as 15 cm) over time, low back pain due to fractures of the spinal bones, neck pain due to fractures of the spinal bones, or even stooped posture or kyphosis, also called a “dowager’s hump”. Because most patients will suffer from low back pain, we wondered if there were any new methods through which early symptoms could be detected and any relationships between low back pain and osteoporosis? Therefore, we reviewed articles from the past 10 years (since 2000). We checked medline using the key words ‘low back pain’ and ‘osteoporosis’, and limited the search to the English language. We found 24 articles (including four review articles) and focused on the relationship between low back pain and osteoporosis, diagnosis, and treatment.
