The article considers the development of the lexical system of student slang in time. Data presented in the paper are the result of a multi-stage study aimed at investigating the variability of student slang. The paper concludes that there is a more stable student slang lexical items which do not show active change of the semantic structure, and less stable lexical units, which are located closer to the periphery,and demonstrate the active changes in the semantic structure.
