Objectives: The number of children with congenital heart disease (CHD) surviving beyondadolescence is rapidly increasing. To help CHD adolescents make the transition from adolescenceto adult health care, they need to bewell informed about their conditions and take greater personalresponsibility for their care as they mature. The purposes of this articlewere to discuss the impactsof health and lifestyle behaviors in adolescents with CHD, and to propose health-promotinglifestyle behaviors in this population. Methods: A search of the nursing, medical, and socialscience literature was carried out to identify published studies in the English and Chineselanguages from 1995 to 2005. Results: Twenty-six articles were identified as meeting theinclusion criteria, including 13 review papers and 13 studies. The importance of the transitionalcare issues for adolescents with CHDwas recognized as being critical.Health needs of adolescentswith CHD were another focus of the review articles. These studies were further examined basedon the lifestyle behaviors of adolescents. Health-promoting lifestyle behaviors were found topotentially be capable of sustaining or increasing thewell-being of adolescentswith variousCHDs.Conclusions: The transition of adolescents with CHD into adulthood has been a significantclinical concern as their survival rate increases. Examining the appropriateness of healthpromotinglifestyle behaviors for adolescents with CHD may provide a basis for developing ahealth educational program specific for adolescents with CHD that facilitates their transition toadult health care.
