In many senses, viewing the ‘other’ has always been a part of the tourist activity of dominant society. The ‘other’ has been seen as a source of potential exotic pleasure brought about by differences and excitement. However, how the indigenous village handles the touristic matters when the ubiquitous tourists pour into the village? This study examines the issue of authenticity in touristic space and activity, how Smangus Village pursuing the concept of existential authenticity through its tourism development and tourism activity. The field survey started in January, 2006 and ended in June, 2009. The data were collected through ethnographic methods. This study shows that Smangus are entitled to evolve in response to change circumstances (space and activity) in their own way, instead of as others expect — claiming and exercising that freedom is the ultimate expression of existential authenticity. The research results will enhance the understanding of autonomy and authenticity matters of the aboriginal villages in Taiwan and suggests how existential authenticity concept can be used in the future research and in tourism planning
