Recently researchers have found that mood states affect decision-making. People tend to rely on emotional information for making decisions. Relevant research has shown that anxiety motivates individuals to select low risk tasks, to reduce uncertainty, and to be risk-aversive. Additionally, people with a sad mood tend to prefer high reward and risk seeking. If we apply the "mood-repair hypothesis" to travel preferences, it's reasonable to infer that anxious individuals are likely to prefer a group-package-tour which appeals to relaxation and comfort, low risk/low reward gambling games and is more sensitive to travel risks. On the other hand, people with a sad mood might be apt to select a free tour which appeals to their sense of achievement and adventure. They might prefer high reward/high risk gambling games and be less sensitive to travel risks. Experimental results presented here support the hypotheses deduced from a mood-repair perspective and indicate that anxiety and sadness impact on travel preferences in a significantly different way.
