The golden-rain tree (Koelreuteria formosana) is a native Taiwanese species with beautiful flowers and fruit that changes seasonally. In an unbalanced ecosystem, there may be a massive gathering of scentless plantbugs (Leptocoris augur) around the trees that causes distress among the park’s visitors. Further, this may lead to visitor demands to remove the trees. A questionnaire was distributed in three neighboring parks in Taichung City. There were 520 valid questionnaires. The results revealed that the majority of the respondents lack sufficient knowledge about scentless plant bugs. Younger respondents expressed higher levels of distress. Older people and daily park visitors were not influenced by the bugs and were not discouraged to revisit the parks even when massive amount of bugs gathered around the trees. They were less likely to agree that the golden-rain tree should be removed. Our findings show that when large amounts of scentless plant bugs appeared, frequent removal of the bugs was the most efficient solution. This research provides park administrators with some potential solutions to dealing with this issue.
