This study employed driving simulation and eye tracking to explore the relation between situational workload and eye movements of drivers under attentive and inattentive conditions. There are 8 subjects participated in this study, all of whom were required to hold a valid driver’s license. The independent variables were concentration (attentive, inattentive) and road conditions (pedestrians crossing, balls appearing, road work, andinverted tree). The dependent variables included Time to First Fixation (TFF)(ms), First Fixation Duration (FFD) (ms), Total Fixation Duration (TFD) (ms), Fixation Count (FC) (frequency), and subjective measures (NASA-TLX).Results showed that under attentive conditions, drivers are more aware of road conditions, resulting in shorter TFF with resulting fewer FC and lower NASA-TLX. The influence of road conditions on eye movements and workload varied according to the situation.
