This study examines how anaphor is used by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) writers and American writers. Evidence in the essays examined for cohesive ties (Halliday & Hasan, 1976) of anaphoric relationships suggests that EFL writers sporadically violate the constraints (Fox, 1993) placed on these relationships beyond the level of sentence, and that these violations may have a negative effect on the interpretation of the written product.
