Co-written and directed by Akira Kurosawa, Ikiru is a 1952 Japanese film inspired by Lev Tolstoy’s “The Death of Ivan Illyich”. In this film, Kurosawa presents the life of a middle-aged petty official Kanji Watanabe, who, after learning of his mortal illness, starts to examine his own past and, seeing its meaninglessness, tries to find a way to endow his remaining life with meaning, with what Martin Heidegger calls “authenticity”. The purpose of this paper is to interpret Ikiru in terms of Heidegger’s concept of authenticity as explicated in his book Being and Time.
