According to theological and anthropological researchers, the Christian Pentecostal/Charismatic Movement is an‘extremeindividualized religion’in which believers focus exclusively on theirrelationship with God. However, this article argues that because feeling‘the sacredness’relies not only on the body and feeling but also onthe cultural symbolic system, the Pentecostal/Charismatic Movementis not just an‘individualized religion’even though is emphasizes therelationship between the person and God. The Pentecostal/CharismaticMovement directs to‘rightly’interpret and to feel these sacredexperiences, even though religious experiences have their own subjectivity.
The cultural symbolic system of the Pentecostal/CharismaticMovement is a set of‘ideologies’rather than a set of symbols thatpeople share. The church repeats the daily, weekly and yearly activitiesto imbue and train believers with the cultural logic of the Pentecostal/Charismatic Movement, which helps people to interpret their daily livesand somatic experiences though these experiences do not correlate inappearance. The true function behind the ideology is to determine themeaning and sacredness of the church rather than the person who hasthe experience. While the personal somatic body has its subjectivity, sacredness is rendered by religious ideology.
The ideology of the Pentecostal/Charismatic Movement, furthermore, deceives believers to trust that they own the right to interpret the somaticexperiences of being filled by the Holy Spirit and to receive revelation fromGod alone. However, not all experiences are sacred; whether it is sacred ornot depends on how it has been judged by the ideology of the Pentecostal/Charismatic Movement.
Therefore, the Pentecostal/Charismatic Movement looks like an‘extreme individualized religion’which deceives believers to trustthat they themselves own the right to interpret God's revelation. But, infact, their logic follows by the ideology of the Pentecostal/CharismaticMovement and the body of the believer becomes a field for ideologicalcontrol.
