The Wireless Access for VehicularEnvironment/Dedicated Short-Range Communication(WAVE/DSRC) system is the state-of-the-art technology forVehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Roadside (V2R)communications, which enables new Intelligent TransportationSystem (ITS) applications and can be used to enhance existingroad services. In the United States, studies on employingWAVE/DSRC to ITS applications have been conducted for years.In Taiwan, a few research projects on WAVE/DSRC-based ITSapplications have been launched by Industrial TechnologyResearch Institute (ITRI) and road/rail administration. In thispaper, we present two representative cases of WAVE/DSRCapplications on freeways and railways. The architectural designand field deployment of the two cases are explained in detail,which can be reference designs for future WAVE/DSRC-basedapplications.
