This study investigated how 5-year-old Taiwanese working-class children used narrative evaluations to create narratives of past events. We recruited 39 children, among whom 20 were children of new immigrants and 19 were ordinary Taiwanese children. The number of girls and boys in each group were similar. The researcher of this study individually interviewed the children regarding their experiences. Data were organized and analyzed according to the rules of CHILDES (MacWhinney, 2000). The independent variables included family culture and gender, and the dependent variables were codes of narrative evaluations. The primary results are presented as follows: (1) No significant difference in language development was observed between the groups. (2) Family culture and gender were significantly related to the use of narrative evaluations by children. (3) Children of new immigrants were likely to use hedges to express their personal opinion and feelings. (4) Girls were likely to use words related to intention and desire. (5) Boys of new immigrants tended to use more gratuitous terms and quantifiers, whereas girls of ordinary Taiwanese families used words associated with affection. A discussion and suggestions are presented in this paper.
