聖經無誤（Inerrancy）是近代釋經學最大的難題之一，聖經與神學學者避之唯恐不及。它也引發了福音派內部四分五裂之現象，可說是近代教會內部最敏感的議題之一，1 經常因此引起彼此間的紛爭不休。然而這個難題在初代及中世紀的教會中幾乎不成困擾，2 它是由於近代歷史批判學蓬勃發展，導致北美神學界的福音派與自由派之間對立，所延伸出的產物。這股世紀之爭的風暴也吹到華人教會。

The debate about biblical inerrancy extended over one century, including three waves: the early 20th century, the 1970’s which ended up with the Chicago Statement in 1978, and the ongoing development afterwards. This article traces the responses within evangelical scholarship, especially the different perspectives of doctrines of scripture between North America and Britain. The diversity among them indicates different idealism and philosophy of historical movement. The writer believes that the Chicago Statement re-opened the communication channel between both sides, and expects the dialogues to bring more creative aspects and dynamic consensus. The writer also agrees with McGowan that “the third way” might help both sides to reach a common view.
