This paper takes Lo-fu’s early works as its main subject, focusing especially on two poetry anthologies, Shishi Zhi Siwang (Death of a stone cell) and Mo Ge (Demonic songs), to explain how body fluids function symbolically in the nexus among self, text and world. The concrete strategy for implementing this study is to begin with imagery related to bodily fluids, and with this common thread, string together the use of artistic devices, historical background, and the subject material of the literary works, subsequently examining inside and out the way in which these factors interweave. It is hoped that by analyzing the subject matter of the literary works with a commitment to their spiritual dimension, while at the same time considering physiological phenomena when appropriate, this study will broadly expand interpretive space. It is not only tears that Lo-fu makes use of; various kinds of body fluids serve as ‘resources’ by which to express emotion. At the same time, body fluids, with their power to permeate, become a marvelous hinge-point for transformation and a medium for penetrating borders in poetry.
