It was a prevalent phenomenon for scholars to go traveling in the Ming (明代) dynasty. Shu, Sha-keh (徐霞客) was one of the famous ones. Chen, Dih (陳第), forty years earlier than Shu, was an outstanding military general as well as a famous scholar noted for his voluminous publications and long history in traveling. Many people are aware of Chen’s contribution to metrical studies, but not his long history of travels. From studying the manuscripts of scholars who went traveling in the Ming dynasty, Chen, Dih’s travel style was quite extraordinary. Not only did he visit the Five Mountains (五嶽), but he also visited Taiwan. He was probably the only scholar who traveled to Taiwan at that time. Chen spent almost twenty years in traveling. His last travel lasted about six years when he was about seventy years old. It was amazing for such an old man to travel for so long when traffic was difficult four hundred years ago. The objective of this study focuses on the travel interests, motives, and concerns in his traveling manuscripts of old age.
