英文摘要

Background: Work stress is an increasingly significant threat to the mental health of nursing staffs. Participation in leisure activities has been shown to help individuals cope with stress and enhance mental health. Purpose: This study investigates the current mental‐health and leisure‐participation statuses of clinical nurses, the constraints faced by these nurses in participating in leisure activities, and the relationship among the sevariables in order to explore the significant predictors of mental health. Methods: A stratified random sampling was used to distribute a cross‐sectional questionnaire survey at a medical center in Taipei. The questionnaire included: a demographic inventory and a job content, mental health, leisure participation, and constraint inventory. Valid data were collected from 285 participants between August and October 2012. The effective response rate was 89.06%. Results: Participants had relatively high degrees of anxiety and insomnia and relatively poor mental health statuses. Poorer mental health status was associated with younger age, less service seniority, work as a psychiatric nurse, and work as a shift work nurse. Participation in leisure activities related positively with mental health, while leisure constraints related negatively with mental health. Participation in leisure activities and leisure constraints accounted for 26% of the total variance in mental health status. Conclusions: Greater attention should be paid to the mental health status of hospital nursing staffs. To improve the mental health status of nurses, administrators may encourage staff participation in physical activities and social leisure activities and fostera culture of health promotion within hospitals.
