On July 30th, 2011, an Oriental Honey Buzzard fledgling (Permis ptilorhynchus) was found by a Siaojiaosi mountain road in Yilan County. This fledgling was first sent to the local Animals Disease Control Center for assistance. After 2 days, the fledgling was then transferred to the Wildlife Rescue Center of Taipei Zoo to further its treatment. Unfortunately, the fledgling died a few days later. The specimen had since been preserved in the zoo. We examined the morphological characteristics of this Honey Buzzard and concluded that it was a fledgling just old enough to leave its nest. With this finding, we reported it as the first explicit breeding evidence of Oriental Honey Buzzard in Yilan County. We also carried out a habitat survey in Siaojiaosi mountain areas afterwards. We found that the natural broad-leaved forest environment and the high density of hornet comb, the main food of Oriental Honey Buzzard, revealed this area an ideal breeding ground for Oriental Honey Buzzard.
