Past research had suggested the influence of parenting beliefs on parenting practice, which in turn may affect children’s psychological adjustment. Traditional Chinese parenting beliefs emphasize children’s obligation of obedience and parents’ responsibility of caretaking. It is important to explore their effects of these beliefs on youth and the mechanisms. The study used secondary data analysis to examine the associations between parenting belies, parenting practice, and youth’s depression and delinquency in a sample of 704 high school students and their parents from New Taipei City. The path analysis of the mediation model showed significant associations between parents’ responsibility of caretaking and their daily care and monitoring of children. Beliefs in children’s obligation of obedience were negatively correlated to parental monitoring. In addition, parents’ daily care and monitoring were associated with lower delinquency in youth. Parenting beliefs and parenting practice were not significantly associated with youth’s depression. The implications of these results for practitioners were discussed.
