本文從晚清報業的發展談起，先釐清《點石齋畫報》做為一種畫報，與以文字為主的《申報}之間的差別為何，藉此強調《點石齋畫報》中圖像的重要性。按著從晚清上海的經濟情況切人，指出上海經濟的發展帶動了女性的就業，連帶使得大量的妓女湧人上海:這群妓女除了中國妓女外，也包含了外國妓女，諸如美國、法國、俄羅斯妓女等等，其中又以日本妓女的人數最多。《點石齋畫報》因其本身「報」的特質，對於這些妓女所發生的種種事情，往往加以報導並且評論。本文將討論重點放在《點石齋畫報》中的日本妓女圖像上，討論《點石齋畫報》在報導日本妓女時，是如何看待這些日本妓女，所形成的評論又為何。另一方面，筆者針對《點石齋畫報》對日本藝妓與娼妓的報導也進行了一些探討，指出《點石齋畫報》在圖像上多並未加以區分兩者的差別，進而造成《點石齋畫報》中藝妓與娼妓的圖像混淆，使得兩者原本具有的界線模糊，呈現出與真實日本妓女不同的日本妓女圖像。

In order to emphasize the importance of images in Tian-Shih-Chai Pictorial, this paper discussed what the difference between Tian-Shih-Chai Pictorial as a pictorial and Shen-Pao as a newspaper was from the development of newspaper industry in the late Ching. Then the author pointed out that the economic development in Shanghai in the late Ching promoted the employment rate of women, and also let lots of prostitutes get into Shanghai: In addition to Chinese prostitutes, there were foreign prostitutes such as American' French, Russian prostitutes, and most of them were Japanese prostitutes. Because of the characteristics of newspapers, Tian-Shih-Chai Pictorial often reported and commented on those foreign prostitutes. This paper focused on the image of Japanese prostitutes in Tian-Shih-Chai Pictorial, and tried to discuss how TianShih- Chai Pictorial considered those Japanese prostitutes, and what the comments were? On the other hand, the author also tried to discuss on the report of Japanese prostitutes and geisha in Tian-Shih-Chai Pictorial, and found that there was often no difference between the images of Japaese prostitutes and geisha. Because of that, the images of Japanese prostitutes and geisha in Tian-Shih-Chai Pictorial were confused and made the distinctions between them blurred, and that made the images different from the real Japanese prostitute.
