Siddhartha is a 1922 novelette by Hermann Hesse, a German-Swiss poet and novelist awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1946. It explores the spiritual quest of an Indian young man named Siddhartha during the time of Gautama Buddha. Lyrical and philosophical, the book was influential during the 1960s as it rediscovered Oriental wisdom as a remedy for human sufferings. The purpose of this study is to explore Buddhist wisdom through this novelette. Siddhartha is every one of us with an inherent inclination to seek happiness. His quest is not a unique experience belonging to a religious man. What he experienced is common to humanity with all insatiable desires and disillusionment. Analyzed from the Buddhist perspective, this novelette is an allegory on human life, which is plagued with sufferings yet full of potential liberation. The contents of this paper will be divided into two parts. The first part illustrates Siddhartha’s suffering as a common feature of life, which is further classified into three moral deviations in Buddhism: greed, hatred and delusion. The second part analyzes the wisdom Siddhartha got to eradicate sufferings. It includes essential Buddhist doctrines on compassion, emptiness and karma. The gaining of Buddhist wisdom turns out to be the supreme achievement of his quest. There is no physical valor to excite readers’ emotions during this journey; there is only the serene unfolding of Buddhist truths by which we can find our own way to Deliverance. While scientific objectivism has become the dominant discourse in today’s world, this novelette offers religious truths for us to ponder and follow.
