瑪西（Doreen Massey）提出「權力幾何學」（power geometry）的概念，指出有些人在全球化的過程中掌握權柄，引領風騷，成為全球化的受益者；有些人則仰人鼻息，淪為役人之役、適人之適的囚奴。這種「權力幾何學」的概念凸顯了跨（國）文化流動過程中所涉及的權力不均衡、關係的不對等與階級身份的差距等倫理議題。列維納斯（Emmanuel Levinas）倫理觀讓我們對全球文化流動下的「權力幾何學」有更深入的瞭解。藉由列維納斯關於自我／他者、整全／無限的倫理觀，本論文擬以黃錦樹的《由島至島──刻背》為例，析論跨（國）文化流動中，移民社會的「他性」與邊緣性是如何拒斥主流霸權文化的整併、同化或客體化，建立在地主體性。論文將探討小說家如何透過其作品體現倫理關懷，如何藉由書中人物的邊緣、局外處境「再現」（represent）跨國文化流動所蘊涵的「他者」與「自我」的對話關係，以及「離根性」與「固根性」的消長、辯證關係。

This paper comprises two parts, one theoretical and the other practical. The theoretical part explores the relationship between globalization and ethics in light of Levinas’s concept of “the face of the Other,” focusing on ethical issues implicit in global-cultural flows. The practical part probes the marginality and otherness of ethnic-Chinese Malaysians as represented in Ng Kim Chew’s Carving on the Back, elucidating how the writer explores ethical and diasporic issues in a global context.
