As a haunting phantom, guilt and shame entangled with negative feelings confine people to a miserable and even dysfunctional plight. This article explores these feelings and the ways of their relief in two parts. To further define the focus of this article, the Introduction, taking from the biblical perspective, will succinctly elucidate the relationship between guilt-shame and sin as well as their impact on humans. The first part of the article distinguishes guilt from shame in nature and in human life. How Adam and Eve, when sinning against God, experienced guilt-shame reveals the very nature of guilt and shame, which is affirmed by the life of Israelites. Furthermore, the psychological view of the nature and impact of guilt-shame will be introduced and a comparison between the psychological perspective and the biblical one will be drawn. The second part of the article deals with the principles for the treatment of guilt and shame presented in the Bible and proposed by psychologists. This preliminary integration of theology and psychology is expected not only to bring in the Christian understanding of guilt-shame and offer the biblical principles for treatment but to apply the practical contribution of psychology to therapy so as to give a more thorough consideration for the treatment of guilt and shame.
